North Texas Giving Day Preview

North Texas Giving Day and local nonprofits are teaming up with Oaktopia to kick off the Denton music festival with an evening of music, fun, and generosity on the square.

For the past three years North Texas Giving day, an online event where individuals can donate money to the nonprofit of their choice, has sponsored an evening of fun and music on the square to raise awareness of their charitable cause. This year, North Texas Giving Day and Oaktopia Music Festival are combining the charitable cause with the opening night of the music festival.

“This is a cool and unique opportunity for these groups to come together and have a unified front for a good cause in Denton,” said Laura Wells, Director of Resource Development for Good Samaritan Society in Denton and Board Chair for North Texas Giving Day - Denton County. “We see combining forces with Oaktopia as a natural fit to raise awareness for both the local music community and area nonprofits.”

Wells had the idea of combining the events and was received enthusiastically by the organizers of Oaktopia. The event will be Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM on the square. There will be 61 local nonprofits sponsoring different booths raising awareness for various charitable causes.

Oaktopia will provide the music for the evening. The Texas Gentlemen will be playing on the rooftop stage at LSA Burger Co. There will also be several Denton area food trucks on hand to add delicious food options to the festivities.

Carol Goglia, Director of Marketing and Communications for Communities Foundation of Texas, said that Denton County is ranked fourth among total charitable donations received in Texas. She cites the tremendous amount of money that the city of Denton has been able to raise in previous years as a reason to why Denton County ranks highly in Texas.

Last year Denton County raised $952,570 in the 24 hours during North Texas Giving Day. Donation can be made at northtexasgivingday.org, all donations of $25 or more will be met with an added bonus contributed by Communities Foundation of Texas.

Organizers of both Oaktopia Music Festival and North Texas Giving Day are hopeful that this new union can become a staple of the Denton activity calendar for years to come.
