Weekend Update: 6/1–6/4

Though it's only the first weekend of June, the summer season seems to be sporadically rearing its ugly (or pretty, depending on your preference) head. Take advantage of what's left of the “cooler” weather by exploring the true musical and creative talent our community has to offer. We’ve highlighted a few of these events to help guide you to your next weekend adventure. So take a gander and get to movin’!

Thursday, June 1

LOL Give-Back Night

Game Changers Sports and Arcade Grill, 6:00 p.m.

Join Game Changers Sports and Arcade Grill and 7Feathers, a local nonprofit, as they host Give-Back Nights. Each Give-Back event will take place at Game Changers and will benefit a different local nonprofit. The beneficiary for this Give-Back Night is Language of Laughter (LOL), a local nonprofit that simultaneously works to enrich local entertainment and local students’ lives. Come meet and hang out with LOL comedians, organizers, and volunteers. Classic arcade games and cocktails for a good cause? We’ll see you there, Denton.

Rosegarden Funeral Party, Richard Haskins, Dead Vinyl

BackYard On Bell, 9:00 p.m.

Start the weekend to your already short week off early, and head to BackYard on Bell for a night of live music. Featuring performances by Fort Worth vintage rock ‘n’ rollers Dead Vinyl and Denton’s infamous punk rocker Richard Haskins, this bill will get your Thursday a-movin’ and a-shakin’. Rosegarden Funeral Party, alternative rock band from Dallas, opens. This all-ages show is FREE. Revelry begins at 9:00 p.m.

Friday, June 2

Summer Nights in the Backyard

BackYard on Bell, 8:00 p.m.

Summer may still be a few weeks away, but summer-like weather is already upon us. Enjoy a somewhat summery evening along with a few cold ones and a few folksy tunes at BackYard on Bell. Performing live will be Levi Cobb & The Big Smoke, Silas Nello, and Slightly Highly Lovely; Fool Hearts opens the show. This all-ages event is only $3! Music starts around 9:00 p.m.

Party With A Purpose

Rockin’ Rodeo, 8:00 p.m.

Join Rockin’ Rodeo on Friday, and every Friday in June, as they #PartyWithAPurpose to benefit the Denton Animal Support Foundation and the Linda McNatt Animal Center. A portion of door and liquor sales from the night will go to benefit these two wonderful organizations. Come toss back a few and dance to your faves for a good cause starting around 8:00 p.m. Drinks and dancing for the doggos (and all other fur babies in need)? We’ll say no more.

Brave Combo

Dan’s Silverleaf, 9:00 p.m.

Dan’s Silverleaf is celebrating their 15th anniversary this month! Helping celebrate this milestone is Denton’s own Brave Combo. Usually dubbed a polka band, this Texas-based quintet will deliver a myriad of worldly musical styles, including salsa, rock, classical, cumbia, and more. Come celebrate one of Denton’s finest venues with one of Denton’s finest bands. This party starts around 9:00 p.m. and is only $10. 21+.

Friday Mean, Paul Slavens

Taps & Caps, 9:00 p.m.

This Friday, delve into what Denton does best: music. Join Lone Star Taps & Caps for a night of local tunes, featuring performances by two of Denton’s favorite songwriters: Friday Mean (Conor Wallace) and Paul Slavens. Wallace is known for being a musical idea machine and Slavens is known for his unique storytelling songs as well as being a KXT radio host. If you haven't had the chance to see either of these artists (or even if you have), treat yo’self! There's a $3 cover for those 18–20 and a $1 cover for those 21+.

Saturday, June 3

Pickling and Preserving the Harvest

MLK Jr. Recreation Center, 10:00 a.m.

Are you interested in learning how to pickle and preserve all the things (well, not ALL)? Or perhaps you'd just like to sharpen your pickling skills? Join the Texas Agrilife Family, along with Consumer Science Agent Courtney Davis, as they lead a hands-on demonstration of pickling techniques, the how-tos of proper equipment use, and safety. Don't have what you need to pickle? Stop by the Denton Community Market beforehand to grab fresh local veggies. Space is limited for this class, so if you find yourself in a pickle (sorry not sorry), you can catch the next class on June 6. You can register via a link on the event page. FREE!

Colere IV: Music + Art

BackYard on Bell. 7:00 p.m.

Join Granatum Film Fest, a short film collage and art exhibit, at BackYard on Bell for Colere IV, a music and art extravaganza. This creative function will feature face-painting, a photo booth, a raffle to win Band Together Denton 2018, art vending, and, of course, live music. Plus, you can catch dance performances by the Little D Performance Platform, Denton’s first professional dance performance venue. Oh, and this event will close with a dance party lead by Galaxe. This all-ages event is only $3. Let's dance, Denton.

Gypsy Sun Revival, Maestro Maya, Anwar, Summit

Midway Craft House, 8:00 p.m.

Shake up your weekend by scoping out local music while enjoying a local (and then some) brew or two at Midway Craft House. Featuring performances by Summit, Anwar, Maestro Maya, and Gypsy Sun Revival, this bill will deliver all the psych-rock and tribal/doom funk you can squeeze into a Saturday (we think). This event is FREE.

Goldenjoy, Leoncarlo, Mr. Grudge

Taps & Caps, 9:00 p.m.

Seek and you shall receive—music, that is. Join Lone Star Taps & Caps for a night of live local music and explore the true talent that resides within our community. Goldenjoy starts off the night by bringing the electronic/ambient dance party to the stage, along with violin master and song-looping extraordinaire Leoncarlo. Showcasing this bill is Mr. Grudge, the new electro-soul project from indie-rock weirdo Matthew Gray of Matthew and The Arrogant Sea. There's a $3 cover for those 18–20 and $1 for those 21+. Cold brews and good tunes? Sounds like a sublime Saturday.

Sunday, June 4

Queso Contest

Mulberry Street Cantina, 3:00 p.m.

Mulberry Street Cantina is celebrating National Cheese Day with—you guessed it—cheese, cheese, and more cheese. Join the Cantina for their first-ever Queso Contest, taking place this Sunday. You can sample all the queso your little heart desires and vote on the best overall and most original quesos. This event is free; however, bags of chips will be available at the door with a donation of $5. Proceeds will benefit the Denton Animal Support Foundation. We were hooked at the first mention of queso, but helping out our furry friends? We can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday. Get ready to dip into the dip around 3:00 p.m.

Unicorn Stampede

BackYard on Bell, 5:00 p.m.

Join BackYard on Bell (BYOB) for Unicorn Stampede, a unicorn-themed party and fundraiser for Dentonite Gena Felker. Gena suffers from a rare form of cancer, and when friends learned of her diagnosis, they began referring to her as a unicorn—now a symbol of strength and perseverance for her. In need of an operation to help improve her quality of life, Gena and friends invite you to BYOB for a night of face-painting, art auctions, hula-hooping, and more. Plus, there will be live performances by Friday Mean, Megan Storie & the Tellers, and Leoncarlo. It’s only $5, and all proceeds (from the cover) will benefit Gena and her upcoming surgery. Let’s give this lady a stampede of unicorn power!
