Weekend Update: 2/16 - 2/19

Let the woes of the week slip-slide away as you let your curiosity guide you to explore the creative community events our Lil’ d has to offer. Start by letting your inner artist out at Dr. Sketchy’s alt-drawing class; then, continue onto being crafty by chatting about (and drinking) a few brews; finally, end the weekend on a high note with a margarita contest. If you need a little music in your life, there is, of course, a slew of spellbinding shows to catch. We’ve picked a few events to help you along your adventure. Check it out!
 

Thursday, February 16

Dr. Sketchy’s Denton
Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 6 PM

The world’s premier alt-drawing movement Dr. Sketchy’s is making its mark once again in Denton. Join underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality for a night of big hair, dirty fingernails, and swords as this class’ theme is pirates. It’s only $5 to draw, y’all. B.Y.O.B. Arrrrrr your interests piqued? Seaaaa you there, Denton.

Springtime and the Changes, The Dimaggios
Tom’s Daiquiri, 9 PM

Jumpstart your weekend with live music and a cocktail (or two, or three) at Tom’s Daiquiri. Denton indie band Springtime and the Changes hit the stage with their dreamy jangle-pop. Joining them is “the best thing out of Waco”—The Dimaggios, who’ll be showcasing their angelic yet heavy-garage ballads. It’s free, y’all!

Pine Martyn, Lex Lata, LunaSol, Samus David Jr.
Killer’s Tacos, 8 PM

Thursdays call for lots of tacos and even more live local music, naturally. Head to Killer’s Tacos to achieve this pre-weekend dream, as Pine Martyn—the solo project of Brandon Harris—delivers his ethereal folk melodies to the stage. Lex Lata, LunaSol, and Samus Davis Jr. join the bill. Tacos and music? Sounds like a killer Thursday. Free!
 

Friday, February 17

DentonRadio.com + The Bearded Monk
The Bearded Monk, 6 PM

Calling all craft beer lovers and connoisseurs alike! The Manhattan Project Beer Company will be chatting about craft beer with DentonRadio.com on the #FreeBeerFriday show. After the show, join these fine folks at The Bearded Monk flatter your tastebuds with a few brews. We’ll lend our ears and our tastebuds to that!

Mother Tongues, Bad Beats, Smokey Mirror, Maestro Maya and the Funky Homunculus
Andy’s Bar, 7 PM

Psych yourself up for a night of live local music at Andy’s Bar. Smokey Mirror brings the spicy psych blues from Funkytown, Bad Beats shows us how these Dentonites do garage/surf rock, and Mother Tongues headlines the bill with their dreamy psych rock. Maestro Maya and the Funky Homunculus starts the night off. The hosts of this event as that you “wear your momma’s wedding gown so we can mop up da dance floorrrrr.” (We’re going to need pictures.) $5. 21+.

Silas Nello, Miranda Kennedy, Chris Welch & The Cicada Killers, Lochness Mobsters, Pearl Earl
BackYard On Bell, 8 PM

Find the thrill of the weekend as it’s just getting started this Friday at BackYard On Bell. North Texas music-scene veteran Chris Welch and his band The Cicada Killers will show us what Texas R&B is all about, while Austin band Lochness Mobsters will showcase their lo-fi surf-rock sounds and rainbow-fuzz pop foursome Pearl Earl brings the dance party with their psychedelic rock. Silas Nello and Miranda Kennedy start off the night. This all-ages show is only 3 bucks!

Animal Spirit Album Release
Jagoe House, 9 PM

Direct your attention to Jagoe House this Saturday evening for an all-local lineup as stacked as any of us might ever see. Biographies will close out the evening but not before Kites and Boomerangs, Dome Dwellers and Animal Spirit have all had their say. If that’s not enough for you, Animal Spirit has a brand new album for you. This show is guaranteed to bring an audience to the edge a few times over before it finally leaves faces flushed, ears ringing as they wander in a satisfied stupor toward Fry St. Get in early if you want a piece of the action, folks. The show is free, BYOB and the music starts at 9:30 PM.

Somogyi, Megan Storie
Taps & Caps, 9 PM

Taps & Caps presents a night of live local music, featuring performances by Somogyi and Megan Storie. Pop-in for a brew and stick around to be serenaded by the ambient acoustic melodies of Ashley Somogyi. Megan Storie of Exit Glaciers joins, showcasing her singer-songwriter skills in a solo set. There is a $3 cover for those 18–20 and $1 for those 21+.  Let these lovely ladies strum their way into your weekend and your heart. Music starts at 9 PM.


Saturday, February 18

Keep Denton Thrashing 2017
OSDH/Dan’s Silverleaf, 5 PM

The second annual Keep Denton Thrashing will be held Saturday at both Oak St. Drafthouse and Dan’s Silverleaf, celebrating the life of beloved bartender and Dentonite Nick Thrasher through music, art, and companionship. Oak St. Drafthouse will host a local art silent auction as well as activities for kids between 5 PM and 7 PM. Starting around 7:30 PM, Dan’s Silverleaf will host DFW Punk Rock Karaoke as well as performances by Nathan Allen of Seryn, Warren Jackson Hearne of Le Leek Electrique, Isaac Hoskins, and more. There is a $10 cover for the Dan’s show. All proceeds from this event will benefit First Book, a nonprofit that provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need. An after-party will continue at Oak St. Drafthouse from 1 AM–2 AM. Let’s keep Denton thrashing, y’all.

The Hymens, notLando, Just Met, Mother Tongues, Sunbuzzed, Trap Lord
The Rabbit Hole, 8 PM

Head to The Rabbit Hole to catch the return of notLando, a one-man band from Austin who’ll sonically unravel his avant-garde stylings. If you miss Mother Tongues Friday, they’ll be showcasing their dreamy psych sounds along with garage-rock band Sunbuzzed. The Hymens, Just Met (ATX), and Trap Lord join the bill. Free, but donations for the touring bands is appreciated. Music sounds off at 8 PM. See event page for address.

Power Trip Executioner’s Tax Video Shoot
Andy’s Bar, 6:30 PM

Wildly popular Dallas thrash metal band Power Trip is shooting the video for their song "Executioner's Tax" off their new album Nightmare Logic, available on February 24th, at the recently remodeled Andy's Bar and they want you to join the fray. The band will be playing a full set and and money collected at the door will be donated to Planned Parenthood. Music starts at 7 and the show is 18+. 

Music to Cuddle to, Vol. 2
Andy’s Bar, 8 PM

Valentine’s Day may be over, but you can keep the romance alive with Music to Cuddle to, Vol. 2 at Andy’s Bar. DentonRadio.com’s Sunday Brunch Broadcast is teaming up with Real Rad Records to bring you a stellar lineup more cuddles than you know what to do with. With performances by Lofty, Juicy the Emissary, Kind Beats, and more, this show will keep your head boppin’ and your booty shakin’. There is a $5 cover to join this cuddle party. Music starts at 8 PM. 21+.
 

Sunday, February, 19

Cantina’s Margarita Contest
Mulberry Street Cantina, 3 PM

Wrap-up your weekend with the Mulberry Street Cantina fourth annual Margarita Contest. For a mere $10, you can sample and judge margaritas from up to 20 local establishments (thirsty yet?). The first and second place winners for best margarita will be announced at 5:30 PM. Come a little early to enjoy some gourmet dogs from Beware of Dog. According to the event page a list of contestants will be posted soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that update. Margs and dogs? A Sunday Funday, indeed.
