Spring is Coming: Here's 10 Things To Do Now That It's Getting Warm

Finally, the cold air is moving away and the nice warm temperatures outside call for more fun in the sun. While being locked up in the nice comfort of your room may still sound inviting here are 10 things to do in Denton now that spring has finally arrived.

Gnome Cones is reopening for the new season in Argyle. This all natural snow cone shaped like their name itself puts a different twist on the sunny day treat. Gnome shaped ice is quickly becoming a popular destination spot, according to Cross Timbers Gazette, so try it before they close for the season. Check out their Facebook page for hours and location.

Andrew McMahon once sang "I wanna hear some music, now that they're driving us all underground." In Denton, warm weather means experiencing outdoor music from a variety of genres that aren't beacons of mainstream radio or mass media satellites. The three chief locations you can get sun, grub, drink, and music at are Backyard on Bell, Harvest House, and LSA Burger Co. For those not in the mood to eat, LSA's taste of country and folk music can usually be enjoyed comfortably from the other side of the courthouse lawn.

Speaking of being comfortable on the courthouse lawn, it's picnic season y'all. There's a relatively brief period of time where Dentonites can be in the sun without churning their sweat glands like Robert Hayes in Airplane. Running into Beth Marie's to jump into their ice cream storage isn't feasible. There's too many people in the way. The living is easy in summertime unless the living is in Texas. Embrace the California temperatures while they last and bring out those savvy sandwiches and sweet fruits. Oh by the way, it's legal to drink in public in Denton

Spring also mean crawfish. BOIL through the Nations will be held at Denton County Brew Company on April 14. In addition to getting all you can eat, a person can enter the speed eating tournament which will be held at 3 p.m. and kids can also get in on the fun with crawfish races.

Karma Yoga will be leading sessions on the Square. People can gather on the Square for an hour of yoga. This class is free unless you want to donate to the instructor afterwards, all they request is for attendees to bring their own yoga mat. This event starts March 5, and they'll meet by Andy’s Bar.

Denton Area Running Club hosts The Social Run is held at Oak St. Drafthouse every Wednesday This group meets up to do a 5k run, and more info can be found on the DARC Facebook page. Afterwards enjoy a refreshing beer and socialize with members of the community.

If running is not your thing, then consider a social bike ride. Every Thursday at Eastside, Denton Social Cyclists gather for a 15-20 mile ride. Afterwards the reward is alcohol and camaraderie to ease the burn in riders' healing muscles. An alternative option is to join a different group for the Tuesday Night Bike Ride which starts in front of the Language Building at UNT.

The ultimate fun in the sun activity takes place the last weekend in April and is hugely popular for Denton. The Denton Jazz and Arts Festival is held off downtown Denton. It has numerous jazz bands and food and souvenirs to buy with admission and good times free of charge.

In the interest of instant gratification, it's high time to feed that instant film photography fever that you don't even know you have yet. There's a magic in holding a manifestation of an image that can be gripped with fingertips without having to make sure your phone is charged. Stock up on instant film and camera equipment at Denton Camera Exchange.

Do something crazy. Get a tattoo. Volunteer for a non-profit. Take an instructional course in painting or dancing. Throw a Powerpoint party that explains pros and cons of 90's television programming. New season, new you. Get out of character in a healthy way to have a near-life experience.

Take some time to look and see what else Denton has to offer for this amazing weather. Trying stuff outside a normal comfort can be fun when you meet or bring new friends to enjoy it with you.
