Weekend Update: February 23 - 25

It's the last weekend of February, folks. For a town without a music scene, there sure are more than enough shows and events happening in the next three days to keep everyone and their brother busy. Whether you're checking out national acts like Lil Flip at Andy's or catching local acts at house-show venues, we've got your weekend lined out.

Our picks not your style? Head to our all-inclusive calendar and be the master of your own destiny.

Thursday, February 23.

Lil Flip at Andy’s Bar
Andy’s Bar - 8 PM
Lil Flip and the Art of Freestyle Tour are rolling through Denton on Thursday evening. Little known fact, this Houston-based rapper published a book in 2014 called Don’t Let the Music Industry Fool You! In addition to Lil’ Flip, EZ Rich, Throwed Ese, Baconomics, Ghetto Box, and Buk Baby will be performing this evening, and all for a cool $10. Get there early! Space is limited.

Friends With Benefits Charity Night
Game Changers - 6 PM
If retro video games and tasty bar food weren’t enough, the good folks over at Game Changers (the new barcade in the space of the former Hailey’s Club, RIP) host weekly giveback nights and donate a portion of the day’s sales to a charity. This week they are honoring Friends With Benefits, an organization that works with North Texas charities to raise awareness and funds. $3 drinks and a family friend environment!

Materials Hard + Soft Artist Workshop
PAAC - 6 PM
For $40 you can learn the traditional Korean fiber craft of Jumuni from Materials Hard + Soft artist Bumin Kim. This exciting treat comes with the exhibits 30th anniversary. While you’re at the PAAC, be sure to check out the other galleries and sign up for a membership to support the arts.

Killers Mic Night
Killers Tacos - 6:30 PM
Hosted by the Best Comedian in Denton, this iteration of Killer’s Mic Night is sure to please. Regardless what happens, though, you’ll be in the company of tacos. Killer’s Tacos. So, like, don’t fuck that up.

Friday, February 24.

Family Tree EP Release
Black Box Theater - 7:30 PM
Family Tree is releasing an EP this weekend and they are celebrating at the Black Box Theater with friends Leoncarlo and Whatever Keeps You in The Air. The event is BYOB, which is convenient since Downtown Denton is technically BYOB, too. Grab a bottle of wine from Wine Squared and head over to the Black Box Theater with $5 for cover.

Food Not Bombs Benefit Show
Backyard on Bell - 9 PM
A $5 cover will not only get you into Backyard on Bell to see Wax Logic, STARPARTY, Mojo and Puddin Taine, but it also goes to support the Denton chapter of Food Not Bombs, a group of kind folks serving free vegan and vegetarian food to others.

Meat Paw Studios Pop-Up Apparel Shop
Bearded Monk - 6 PM
Scott Levings will be unveiling the works of Meat Paw Studios on Friday evening over at the Bearded Monk. A spectacle that claims to let your “drooling eyeballs peep on the magnificent glory that lay before them whilst your brains are blown by the disturbing fact that you have had to exist for this long without Meat Paw Studios in your life.” You had us at drooling eyeballs.

Saturday, February 25.

MATAS, Scott Danbom, Leoncarlo
Redwood Studio - 7 PM
Shows at Redwood Studio are extra special for a lot of reasons, one being that it is such a small space surrounded by kind-hearted individuals. For $10 you get free drinks, an evening at an incredible music studio in Denton, and the music accompaniment of Matthew and the Arrogant Sea, Leoncarlo, and Scott Danbom.

Sunrise Pilots, I, the Ghost, Glasir, and New Science Projects
Andy’s - 8 PM
Not only is this a free show, it is also a birthday celebration for one Tiffany Youngblood, co-founder of Band Together Denton and booking-babe over at Dane Manor. I, the Ghost just released a new EP called Daybreak that you have to listen to immediately.

The Little Texas Tour
Lonestar Taps And Caps Denton - 9 PM
Enjoy the sounds of Arielle LaGuette and Matthew Farmer, separately, but both to the smooth taste of any beer you’d ever, thanks to Denton’s own Lonestar Taps And Caps. Back to Denton technically being BYOB, did you know that Taps & Caps has a walk-up window? You’re welcome.

Sunday, February 26.

Civics 101: Informational Dialogue
Harvest House - 3:30 PM
The Denton Feminist Queer Collective’s monthly meeting takes place this Sunday at Harvest House. The focus will be on the Freedom of Information Act, effectively contacting representatives, and what motivates our representatives to write and advocate for bills. Stay informed and meet some great people while you’re at it.
