Weekend Update: February 19, 2016

It’s Thin Line Fest weekend, and as if that weren’t enough for one weekend, other people are doing other things too. What? Yeah.. It’s a lot. But the good news is that if Denton were surfing right now, she’d probably be hanging ten. It’s pretty rad, dude. *Insert other surfer lingo*

Friday February 19

Materials in Retrospect: Sticks, Grit, Mud
Lightwell Gallery
Presenting their senior BFA show in the Lightwell Gallery are Charlotte Kimball, Jacob Burghard, and Grant Kreizenbeck. Open reception was yesterday, but if you didn’t make it out - don’t worry, the show is open through the end of the weekend. The show reflects on primary materials in each of the artists fields, and how they have developed through their undergrad experience. Works will explore each of their double majors in Ceramics, Sculpture, and Metalsmithing/Jewelry

Juice Lab’s Grand Opening
Juice Lab, 7 a.m.
Denton’s newest smoothie and juice bar is opening today! The Juice Lab will have tastings of their new, organic cold pressed juices, nut milks, and treats from their all natural bakery. Attention, vegans: this is where you’re going to want to go. They will have Twisted Bodies Yoga there in the morning and The Damn Fine String Band will be there in evening.

Saturday February 20

Monk’s Monthly Market
The Bearded Monk, 1:00 p.m.
The 3rd Monk’s Monthly Market is upon us, and this is a recurring thing that will take place every on the 2nd Saturday of every month going forward. There will be nine different vendors set up, and there will be food for sale by Mellow Mushroom Denton.

Kusudama Workshop
SCRAP, 3:00 p.m.
薬玉, Kusudama means ‘medicine ball.’ This Japanese art, similar to but not technically origami, is mostly used for decoration now but was once used as incense and potpourri by using bunches of flowers and herbs. The workshop at SCRAP on Saturday will teach attendees how to make this decoration out of any kind of paper.

The Infamists, The Wee-Beasties, West and the Grooves, & Hen and the Cocks
The Jagoe House, 9:00 p.m.
Time to get your house show on, guys. Jagoe House is thrilled to bring the infamous Richard Haskins with the Wee-Beasties, along with The Infamists, West and the Grooves, and Hen & the Cocks. Haskins has already vouched for this night being rowdy, so, now you know.

Denton Zine Fest
Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 9:00 p.m.
There are enough independent creators in Denton to create a Zine Fest, you guys. That is pretty awesome. According to their Facebook event there will be at least 17 different DIY zine makers present on this evening.

Sunday February 21

3rd Annual Margarita Contest
Mulberry St. Cantina, 3:00 p.m.
Who doesn’t want a marg right this very moment? Try to convince us you don’t; you can’t! Okay, actually, you probably can - but for good measure, for $10 you can sample between 18-20 different margaritas (wha?!).
