Weekend Update: 10/20 - 10/23
Well, Denton, as we head into the last week of October, we’ve been reminded of that pesky season summer that just won’t leave us alone. But in the words of Jon Snow, “brace yourself,” as you’ll be in for jacket-wearing, pants-sporting weather this weekend. Perfect timing, Texas, as Lil’ d has plenty of events for you to explore and maybe a few that will excite you. Take a gander, ya’ll.
Thursday, October 20
Jagoe House, 6 PM
JagoeFest returns in hopes to bring Denton its best house show festival yet. This three-day festival will feature thirty bands, presenting some of Denton’s best/newest local acts to Jagoe’s indoor and outdoor stages. There will be performances by The Boombachs, Claire Morales, Orcanaut, Old Potion, Mother Tongues, and many more (25 to be exact). Plus, local artisans Sunday Print Shop, Nice Dudes Servicing Craft, Windfall Clothing, and more, will be showcasing their skills. BYOB if you’re 21+—IDs will be checked! See event page for set times.
October Wine Tasting: New Zealand!
Wine Squared, 6 PM
Calling all wine lovers, enthusiasts, self-proclaimed winos...Join Wine Squared for their October Wine Tasting. This month, they’ll be offering a lineup of four Astrolabe’s handcrafted wines from the Marlborough region in New Zealand. This casual come-and-go event is $18 per person. You’ll receive $5 off charcuterie (fancy meats) when you participate in the tasting. The merrymaking beings at 6 PM.
LGBT + Adult Social Hour
Harvest House, 6 PM
OUTreach Denton will be hosting their monthly LGBTQIA + Adult Social Hour at Harvest House. There will be lively discussions and lots of drinks, so pull up a chair and be social! Bonus: The forecast calls for early morning showers, but by the time this event kicks off it’ll be clear and cool with a low of 49—it’s like the first actual night of fall, y’all. The mixing and the mingling begins at 6 PM.
Greyhounds / RTB2
Dan’s Silver Leaf, 9 PM
Start your weekend early with two long-time Texas bands at Dan’s Silver Leaf. Austin duo Greyhounds has been in the music circuit since ‘99, delivering a sound guitarist Andrew Trube calls “Hall and Oates meets ZZ Top.” (We can get behind that.) Denton staple RTB2 will shower us with their volatile rhythms and their “postmodern Buddy Holly”-esque sounds. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. 21+.
Friday, October 21
Gitmo Presents - Respect the Art
The Abbey Underground, 9 PM
Join Gitmo Music as they present Respect the Art—a night of hip hop, rock, and drunk-punk with a punch of bluegrass at The Abbey Underground. This eclectic lineup will feature music from D-Mar, Doug Funnie, Remain, and more! See event page for additional artists and set times. FREE!
Pearl Earl / Siamese / Sunbuzzed
Harvest House, 9 PM
Shake off the week’s vibe and get all the Friday feels at Harvest House. Denton’s own “rainbow fuzz power trio” Pearl Earl will showcase their psychedelic, pop rock stylings, while Dallas-based Siamese brings us a taste of their glam-rock goodness. Sunbuzzed opens with a touch of spooky garage rock. Music starts around 9 PM. FREE.
Saturday, October 22
Fred Moore Park, 12 PM
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Denton County Friends of the Family has been diligently working to promote awareness among the community. They invite you to join them for a day in the park to celebrate unity and raise awareness for those who feel like they don’t have a voice. This all-ages, family-friendly event will feature live music, prizes, raffles, and food. If you’re interested in volunteering, see event page for details.
An Afternoon in Unsettled Space
The Bearded Monk, 2 PM
Unsettled Space hosts an afternoon of short story, poem and excerpt readings, and signings by DFW writers. If time permits, there will be a quick Q&A before the event starts. There will be works from local artists on display (and possibly for sale) as well as t-shirts by Nice Dudes Servicing Craft. Oh, and of course delicious craft brews. RSVP via the event page.
Park After Dark
Bayless-Selby House, 7 PM
On the night of November 22, 1919, an argument took place outside the Bayless residence—and argument that ended in death...Join the Denton County Office of History and Culture for a night of haunted history through this tragic-tale tour. You’ll hear accounts from key witnesses, town gossips, and others who have personally experienced paranormal activity in the house. Perhaps you’ll see the ghost of Mr. Bayless roaming the halls yourself. ‘Tis the season to be spooked! Tour begins at 7 PM.
Levi Cobb & The Big Smoke / Luke McGlathery / Dear Rachel / The Cover Letter
Andy’s Bar, 9 PM
Saturdays call for great live music and cheap drinks, areweright? Watch The Cover Letter weave indie rock melodies into their classic folk sound and Luke McGlathery strum folksy-style blues. Denton’s own Levi Cobb & The Big Smoke will make you want to swing AND square dance at the same time with their americana, alt-country ditties. Dear Rachel opens. This bill will sure take Andy’s new stage by storm. Music starts around 9:30 PM. $7. 21+.

Yoga + The Green Man Studios
Audacity Brew House, 11 AM
Stretch and keep your thirst quenched with Karma Yoga at Audacity Brew House. The Green Man Studios will be hosting a trunk show at the end of the class, featuring soaps, chakra sprays, candles, and more handmade goodies by achieved reiki master Arthur Graye. East Side Food and Beer Pairing with Boca 31
East Side, 2 PM
Join East Side for another adventure in food and beer pairing. This month’s escapade: Boca 31. They’ll be pairing five delicious beers (TBA, so keep an eye on the event page) with delectable Latin street food. There are only 35 spots available, so if you haven’t already registered there may be a seat or two left. Tickets are $30. You can’t go wrong with Latin food and beer, can you? We don’t think so.
