Weekend Update: 10/13 - 10/16

Where to start, Dentonites? Lil’ d is packed with events this weekend, with everything from a benefit show to a masquerade to Barktoberfest to Chicken $#!+ Bingo (we $#!+ you not). Let this little list help you cultivate a plan for this weekend’s adventure. Check it out: 

Thursday, October 13

Whiskey Myers Melody of Hope AUSA Benefit Concert
Rockin’ Rodeo, 7 PM
Join Melody of Hope and the North Texas Audie Murphy Chapter of ASUA as they celebrate millennials and young professionals who seek to make a positive impact with Heroes Rock! With musical performances by Whiskey Myers, along with special guests Blue Water Highway Band, Heroes Rock! will work engage and educate concert goers on AUSA’s mission and ways to get involved. A nonprofit organization, AUSA focuses on raising funds and awareness for disabled veterans. So, dust off your boots and scoot on over to Rockin’ Rodeo for this charitable happening. Somogyi, Alexandria Rhea, Restless Highway, Random Splatter
Andy’s Bar, 9 PM
Start the weekend early and join Andy’s Bar for a night of eclectic music. Somogyi will be showcasing her avant-garde style to the typical singer-songwriter approach, while Alexandria Rhea brings a bluesy vibe to her solo acoustic set. Fort Worth country-rock band Restless Highway will keep you on your feet. Random Splatter kicks off this versatile bill with a little rock ‘n’ roll around 9:30 PM. 21+. $5.  

Friday, October 14

2016 Denton Independent Motorcycle Show
Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 5 PM
What’s part festival and part pop-up art show? This year’s Denton Independent Motorcycle Show! Taking place at the PAAC, this two-day event will showcase motorcycles that have been transformed by skilled individuals and highlight the energy and dedication that goes into customizing these two-wheeler works of art. Roister and revel in this unique and expressive celebration of bikes with several talented folks and a few awesome vendors. FREE! 

Workshop: Intro to Hand Embroidery with Allie Biddle
The DIME Store, 6 PM
If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to embroider by hand, here’s your chance! This introductory workshop will teach you the basics of hand-embroidery and hoop art. Taught by Allie Briddle and hosted at The DIME Store, each student will stitch a given design during the class and will leave with their very own miniature embroidery kit. All supplies—hoops, fabric, embroidery floss, needles, and scissors—will be provided. This class is $50; register online through the event page. 

Paschall Bar Turns Five + Andy’s New Stage
Paschall Bar, 7 PM
Paschall Bar is celebrating 5 years of slinging Prohibition-era drinks with speakeasy style, AND Andy’s Bar got a new stage! To help mark these two big occasions, there will be everflowing liquor and live music to boot—AV the Great will bring the beats and Starparty will bring...well...the party. (If you’ve ever been to a Starparty show, you catch our drift.) Partake in the festivities with a fancy cocktail or two at Paschall Bar before you head downstairs to catch these local talents at Andy’s. Tickets are $10 at the door. Party starts at 7 PM.

Saturday, October 15

Barktoberfest
North Texas State Fair, 1 PM
Pack up the pups or let the dogs drag you to this year’s Barktoberfest at the North Texas State Fair. Presented by the Denton Humane Society, this dog-centric event will feature a costume contest, music, pet pics, a paw reader (interesting…), low-cost vaccinations, and a raffle! Plus, there will be a weenie-eating contest for the furry friends and popcorn (no contest, sorry) for the humankind. We think this almost too-cute-too-handle event will give them something to bark about! 

The Bearded Monk’s One Year Anniversary Party
The Bearded Monk, 2 PM
The Bearded Monk is celebrating its one year anniversary! Come help them recognize a year of beer releases and winning awards with—wait for it—beer. They’ll be tapping Prairie Artisan Ale’s Birthday Bomb, Lakewood Brewing Company’s Red Wine Barrel-Aged Till and Toll, and much more! Live music will be performed by local bands Boxcar Bandits and Richard Gilbert, and Nice Dudes Servicing Craft will be live-printing a limited edition anniversary shirt (available only at the party). Birthday beers for all! Party starts at 2 PM.

SCRAP Masquerade
Denton Woman’s Club, 6 PM
Be the belle of the craftiest ball of them all and join SCRAP Denton for their 4th Annual SCRAP Masquerade Fundraiser at the Denton Woman’s Club. This year’s theme: Under the Big Top—1930’s Circus. Sport your best carnivalesque mask and costume, while you enjoy live music, an aerial dance performance, an auction, a photo booth, cocktails, and more! Tickets are $10 and available at the door or online with a $2 processing fee. 

LoMeta with Mountain Song
Redwood Studio, 7:30 PM
Join Redwood Studios for an intimate showcase of the alt-rock-pop stylings of LoMeta. This Dallas duo has made headlines for selling their songs for $713 on Bandcamp—a way to deter people from purchasing songs they feel can still be perfected. You can catch them for $708 less with Mountain Song, who will be filling the room with their serene, celestial sounds. The rustic, cozy quarters of Redwood will make the perfect setting to exhibit their distinctive sounds. Doors are at 7:30 PM with a $5 cover. See event page for address. 

Sunday, October 16

Halloween Vegan Potluck
The Chairy Orchard, 1 PM
The Denton Vegetarian Society invites you to get in the spooky spirit and set those hunger pains sailing with tasty treats at their Halloween Vegan Potluck. Bring your favorite fall dish to share (along with the recipe card), and come sporting your most spine-chilling, ghostly garb. Who wouldn’t want to celebrate this sinister holiday among other Dentonites and/or veg heads in costume at an orchard of chairs? See you there, Denton. 

9th Annual Bloody Mary Battle!
II Charlie’s Bar & Grill, 2 PM
Cure those pre-Monday-blues and join II Charlie’s for their 9th Annual Bloody Mary Battle. For only $5 bucks you’ll get samples from over 12 local bars and bartenders—plus, there will be an all-day Happy Hour. Oh, and did we mention there will be a FREE taco bar?! Bloody Marys + tacos (again, FREE) = best Sunday Funday ever. 

Chicken $#!+ Bingo with Raised Right Men
Oak St. Drafthouse, 3 PM
Saddle up, Denton, this show will be a wild (or at least a very interesting) ride. Join the Raised Right Men as they strum a few songs while a game of Chicken $#!+ Bingo transpires—yes, you read that right and it’s everything you think it would be. (In case you’re unaware, you’ll get a numbered card and wait for the chicken to relieve itself on a matching grid square to call Bingo.) A little hillbilly-esque entertainment accompanied by a few cold ones makes for one rowdy Sunday, don’t you think? This just may be one for the books. No cover.
