Gallery Report - September 8, 2016

What's with the spike in vandalism and robbery this week? Students are just trying to earn their education without having to fear for their safety or their car windows being shot out. We think that everyone just needs to see (or make) more art.  There is a rad pop-up art show happening at Brickhaus on Saturday the 10th, in addition to all of the other goodness listed below. If you need some new art for your wall, go to one of these places and find something cool. Support the local arts.

Art Glass Ensembles
513 Bolivar St.
If you like art oversized and nifty stained glass, then head over to Art Glass Ensembles on Bolivar Street where their gallery spaces features two pieces created in 1990 by local artist Terry Sewell. Sewell is known for being the president and owner of Denton Glass Company.

The Bearded Monk
122 E. McKinney St.
If you hang out inside Bearded Monk for at least an hour there is a decent chance you'll see someone buying a piece by Sierra Landeruth off the wall. There is going to be a changeover soon, so hurry over to the Bearded Monk to find a nifty piece of art to take home.

Brickhaus Art Collective
215 S. Woodrow Ln
Brickhaus is collaborating with Voertman's Gallery to present a pop-up art show curated by Given McClure. Criterion will feature paintings, photography, sculpture, and video installations from 11 different artists. There will also be original tees made by Grady McConnell and Maria F. Razo. The event goes from 6 - 10pm.

Patterson-Appleton Arts Center
400 E. Hickory St.
Zines are vital in a DIY culture. Works of Randy Guthmiller presents the works of an artist and educator who founded Dallas Zine Party and Shape Zines. The former is an annual celebration of zines and the latter is a publishing house dedicated to micro-publications. The works are featured in the Festival Hall with no charge for admission.

If cowboy photography piques your interest, you'll want to check out the historic photos from the Charles Cook Collection. The gallery includes photos from the ultimate cowboy/artist, Erwin E. Smith. Weldon's Saddle Shop and Bell & Oak will be adding to the aesthetic with vintage saddles and leatherwork. The opening reception for this is also at 5:30 pm on August 12th. The gallery will continue through September 24th.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: If you're particularly skilled with the crafts or mixed media, then you may be interested in submitting to the 30th annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. The 2017 exhibition will be juried by Joann Edwards, executive director of the Museum of Craft and Design.

West Oak Coffee Bar
114 W Oak St, Denton, TX 76201
The West Oak folks feature an artist of the month in their corridor at the back of their shop. Rather than feature a strictly visual artist, the current flavor is a musician Erik Beruvides. The album covers designed by Kathleen Clark evoke a sense of cultural pride that reveals how proud the artist is of his family’s history. Across three albums his songs are structured to present a narrative representing Erik’s grandparent's journey as immigrants from Cuba.
