Weekend Update: April 28 – May 1

You guys, Arts & Jazz Festival is back again for their 36th annual celebration. You know how this goes—TONS of music, TONS of amazing food, and TONS of things to see. But even if you’re not looking to deal with the festival crowds, there’s plenty going on around town—you could especially check out The Bearded Monk’s mini festival going on Saturday and Sunday.


Thursday, April 28

Captain America Comic Book and Pint Night
Oak St. Drafthouse, 5:30 pm
Comic book nerds rejoice! Get there ON TIME to make sure you get the good stuff. $12 gets you a comic book, three tacos, a beer and a signature pint glass. PLUS someone from Disney is going to be out giving away a ton of free stuff. Captain America fans, this is A MUST for you.

Advance Sculpture Student Show
Lightwell Gallery, 5 pm
You don’t need to be an art major to appreciate art, ya know. And when it’s art made by local artists, you should jump at the chance to check it out—it’s the cornerstone of the Denton community! The Lightwell Gallery (inside the UNT Art Building at the end of Fry St.) is hosting an exhibit showcasing sculptures from amazingly talented UNT students. Check it out, it’s free!

Hotel Broslin presents Death Spa
RGRS, 9 pm
Movie buffs, this one’s for you. Not only will there be a bunch of short films, they’re doing a video/lp swap and giveaway prizes. We’ve checked out the Death Spa trailer. Spoiler alert: it’ll be a workout for your heart and your dark soul.

Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack: Album Release Show for Glow City
Andy’s Bar, 9 pm
Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack (let’s just call them WGWGSA) is releasing his fifth album, Glow City, with musical friends Pansy Moon (headlining) and *~~—yep, that’s the band’s name. There’ll be a ton of new merch, so be sure to bring your dollars. $6 cover.

TWU DanceMakers Concert
Texas Woman's University, Margo Jones Performance Hall, 4 pm
Tonight is the opening of this event, featuring three days of original performance art pieces by leading students in TWU’s contemporary dance program. Get a little culture y’all and support the education systems that make this town great! $7/$9

Wine and Whiskers

Support the local animal shelter—and your love of wine—at this silent auction hosted by the Denton Animal Support Foundation. $70 gets you a ticket for food and drinks and helps our furry friends out there get a warm home.

Friday, April 29

TRIPLE Album Release Party with ABACABA, The Aquaholics, The Infamists
Dan’s Silverleaf, 9 pm
It’s an exciting night for these three acts; each is releasing a new album, like a trifecta of rock blasting the town. Heavy tunes, a bit of prog rock, and closing out with ABACABA’s range of musical spectrum, there’s something for just about everyone here tonight. $7 gets you in, but obvs you’ll want some cash to pick up some cassettes and vinyl.

Vanessa Peters, Daniel Markham & Claire Morales, Tony Ferraro, Jared Caraway

You won’t want to miss a single act on this bill. Some of Denton’s most notorious musicians will be playing the stage tonight, some you may have seen at 35 Denton. Headlining is Vanessa Peters, a fellow Texas musician with roots in indie and folk rock. It’ll be worth every penny of the $5 cover.

MD Presents: Brutalody, Monogamizer, PRI, Circadian

Metalheads: Come out, come out, wherever you are. Head over to Andy’s with $5 in hand and a need for thrashing. You know Denton’s got some good acts up its sleeve—tonight we’re gonna show our chops.

Saturday, April 30

Monks Market/Secret Show
The Bearded Monk, 10 am
We’ve already said it, Arts & Jazz Fest has finally arrived. Our friends at The Bearded Monk are having their own festivities to celebrate, too! There’ll be beer—obvs—music by Richard Gilbert and art at the Monthly Monk Market. Grab some beers and hang out before you head on over to the fest!

UNT Short Film Club Spring 2016 Premiere
Union Circle, 6 pm
Check out this free screening of three films by members of the Short Film Club, plus many introductory trailers. Afterward, some of the cast and crew will have a Q&A.

Dome Dwellers & Lex Lata
Audacity Brew House, 7 pm
Michael and David of Dome Dwellers have been VERY busy playing show after show around town. They hit the stages of 35 Denton and recently came out to support our new radio station during KUZUthon. Full steam ahead, they’re performing at Audacity with the R&B/Jazz/Fusion group Lex Lata. Plus, this’ll be a good chance to check out some of the taps Audacity has right now—Mmmmm!

DDFW Master of the Mic Round #1 Denton
RGRS, 9 pm
This is round one of Masters of the Mic, so make sure you don’t miss it! Our own Sara Button will be a guest judge, alongside Fab Deuce’s Pudge Brewer and Marcus Washington (Milla da Mayor). Want to enter? Bring $20 and two of your best pieces to perform. Only 10 make the cut. $5 for spectators.

Crafty for a Cause
Sleeping Lizzard, 3 pm
Karma Yoga is heating things up with their community participation. Stop into Sleeping Lizzards over on Elm St. and get a lesson in tag making. You'll definitely want to browse the store, it's a shopper's dream. It's a great place to find the perfect Mother's Day Gift!

Habitat Denton’s Women’s Build Week
Pilot Point, 11 am
From April 30th to May 6th, join Habitat for Humanity Denton during Women’s Build Week. You’ll be helping build a house, the 93rd they’ve built in the county, will be in Pilot Point. Bring your muscles out at 11 am to help out!

Baconomics with Superhero.Supervillain, Crop Dust, and Strong Work
Andy’s Bar, 9 pm
Mmmmm, bacon. Okay, so there won’t be bacon—probably—but there will be some sweet tunes, everything ranging from punk to dancey hip-hop. $7 to get into this dance party.

Sunday, May 1

Dr. Sketchy’s Denton
Dan’s Silverleaf, 5 pm
They call it “The world’s premier alt drawing movement.” Sounds pretty dope, right? It’s a drawing workshop, started in Brooklyn by artist Molly Crabapple, and has been taken by storm, now with chapters in over 100 cities, and it’s come back to Denton. And don’t think you have to be a master artist to attend—it’s open to everyone!
