Art Show Preview: Shy Gestures

Shy Gestures sprouted from a conversation Sylvia Mtz had while having a beer and exchanging a mug with Voertman’s gallery director Given McClure. There was an opening to set up an exhibition, so Mtz decided to take on the role of curator for the first time in her life.

This show has a variety of mediums from an impressive group of local artists. The mix of art is representative of Mtz’s lifestyle. “My world is not a restful one because it is flamboyant and full of chaos. I hang out with a variety of musicians and artists, but in the end they all connect. I wanted to bring that connection forged between different areas of creativity and the feeling of restlessness,” says Mtz.

That desire to make connections led to setting up an inclusive opening reception. A large group of vendors will be on hand to sell their art and hang with local artists. A couple music performances will close out the reception. Moth Face will perform her minimal electronica, and the audience will experience the ambient noise with intermittent rhythms made by Cut Shutters. The goal is to have a reception that immerses attendees into the creative world around them.

The theme of the show is about the quiet moment where everything makes sense and inspiration is received. Mtz wants her audience to connect to the idea that these quiet moments happen within restlessness. The works in Shy Gestures are varied, but they’re setup to work together as they are viewed through the gallery space.

Mtz was born in Texas but grew up in Monterey, Mexico. Her work contains similarities with where she grew up before coming to UNT to earn a BFA in Drawing and Painting. She never had any formal art education before college, but she has been making art from an early age.

The opening reception for Shy Gestures is on Saturday September, 17th at Voertman’s Gallery from 6 - 8pm. The gallery will be available for viewing until September 30th.
