Weekend Update: 4/27–4/30

Thursday, April 27

Community Market Arts Vendors

Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 6 PM

Join the Greater Denton Arts Council for a series of panel discussions with the arts vendors of the Denton Community Market. This night’s theme is Upcycled and Recycled Handmade Goods, featuring artists Lora O’Shaughessy, Shannon Fargo, and Dawnelle Thompson. There will be a short info session and artists talks throughout the night, and goods will be available for purchase. Workshop: Candle Making with Resoycled Candle Co.

The DIME Store, 6 PM

Calling all crafters! If you’ve been wanting to learn how to craft your own candle, this is the perfect workshop for you. Taught by Carrie of Resoycled Candle Co., this class will teach you the benefits of using soy and will provide you with step-by-step instructions on pouring your very own candle. You’ll be given a travel tin so your candle can cure overnight. Participants will receive a 20% coupon for www.resoycledcandleco.com. Start your weekend off right with Mike Jones at Rockin’ Rodeo. Who? Mike Jones! This Houston rapper is still tippin’ and will be bringing his chopped and screwed beats to the Lil’ d for one night only. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.rockinrodeo.com. Party starts at 8 PM.

Denton Arts & Jazz Fest

It’s finally here—Denton Arts & Jazz Fest kicks off on Friday! This annual celebration of the arts in our colorful and creative community brings us another year of music, crafts, fine arts, food, and games Friday through Sunday. Bye, Bye Bunny!

The Rabbit Hole, 4 PM

Take a trip down The Rabbit Hole one last time as this house venue says goodbye. They’ll be hosting one last show, featuring performances by a bevy of local musicians and DJ sets by DJ Cactus Cooler, Phosphenism, and DJake Flex. This final farewell starts early and goes into the evening, so bring your shades and your outdoor party accessories—hula hoop, anyone? Jasmine Blake Montgomery will kick off the party with dancin’ and beats. Address available via event page. Free.

 

Not Jazz Fest

Hey, it’s Not Jazz Fest! Whether you are or are not going to this year’s Denton Arts & Jazz Fest, make time to pop by BackYard On Bell and treat your ears to a little rock with bands Remain, Flintlock Gypsy, and Sonar Lights. Denton comedian Joe Coffee hosts this free event. (Get ready to laugh—it won’t be optional.) Plus, there will be cheap beer and delicious homemade pizza, so whatcha’ waitin’ for? These un-jazzy festivities start around 7 PM.

 

Magnet School, Honeyrude, Werewolf Therewolf

Spring Garden Workday

Denton Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center, 10 AM

The Denton Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center needs your help getting their garden ready for the summer season. This family-friendly center offers hiking trails through diverse habitats, and their garden grows veggies that are donated to local soup kitchens and schools. Whether you’re a pro-gardener or just want to flex your green thumb, they would love your help with bed and need maintenance. Wear your most comfortable shoes and your toughest gardening gloves—getting dirty starts at 10 AM.

 

UNT Short Film Club – Official Spring 2017 Premiere

Interested in short films or filmmaking in general? Join the UNT Short Film Club for their Official Spring 2017 Premiere at the UNT Lyceum Auditorium.
